Whether you’re heading to a party with friends and family or enjoying the big game from the comfort of your couch, chances are you’ll be enjoying some game-time snacks this Super Bowl Sunday.

For those whose New Year’s resolutions focus on losing weight or eating healthier, Mary Beth Torres, MS, RDN, manager of team member health and wellness for Baptist Health and a registered dietitian, has some tips to keep your calorie count down as your favorite team runs up the score.

First, try making these simple swaps for traditional Super Bowl snacks.

Torres also recommended practicing portion control, like using a smaller plate so it appears more full. You also can avoid mindless eating by choosing a seat away from the food. Additionally, Torres suggested having a healthy snack before the game because you’re likely to eat more if you’re starving by kickoff. She cautioned, however, not to be too hard on yourself.

“One day isn't going to make or break your healthy eating habits,” Torres said. “But if you’re trying to stay on track, focus more on socializing than food.”
