Bugs are particularly active during the summer

The hot, humid temps of summer are great for backyard picnics and outdoor activities, but they’re also the perfect conditions for bugs and ticks.

How to protect yourself

If you plan on spending time outdoors this summer, there are several things you can do to protect yourself and your family from bugs and ticks, said Shalika Katugaha, MD, system director of Infectious Diseases for Baptist Health. She recommended covering exposed skin, avoiding mosquito and tick-infested areas (think marshes and dense forest) and using insect repellents approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). These safe and effective repellents have a special EPA registration number on them.

“They can be used with sunscreen. Apply your sunscreen first and then the repellent,” she said. She also stressed the importance of controlling bugs in and around your home.

“Use screens on your windows and doors, or keep them closed and use air conditioning, if possible. Make sure to empty items that hold water, such as tires, buckets, kiddie pools, birdbaths and flowerpots, once a week, because even a small amount of water can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes,” Dr. Katugaha said.
