What Is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)?

Obstructive sleep apnea happens when breathing stops during sleep due to a blocked airway. This can cause snoring and pauses in breathing. Many people don’t realize they have it, but a bed partner may notice the signs first. If you or a loved one shows symptoms, talk to your doctor—sleep apnea is a serious condition that needs treatment.

Signs and Symptoms of Obstructive Sleep Apnea

  • Loud snoring, interrupted by pauses in breathing
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Gasping or choking during sleep
  • Restless sleep
  • Mental confusion
  • Irritability
  • Hypertension
  • Nocturnal angina
  • Depression
  • Obesity
  • Sexual dysfunction

Benefits of CPAP Therapy

To experience the benefits of CPAP therapy, you should use your CPAP machine every time you go to sleep and during any scheduled nap. If you are not consistent with the regular use of the CPAP machine, your symptoms will reoccur.

Here are some benefits you may experience once you start and stick with CPAP therapy:

  • Elimination of snoring and abnormal breathing events
  • Increased energy
  • Restful sleep
  • Improved quality of life
  • Feeling rested during the day
  • Reduced risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, heart attack, and stroke
