Not sure whether you need to go to the ER? Here are some good reasons:

• Signs of a stroke or heart attack
• Loss of consciousness
• Severe shortness of breath, stopped breathing or pulse
• Convulsions that last more than 15 minutes or any unexpected convulsions
• Severe cuts where the edges won't come together
• Injuries in which bleeding does not stop after 10 minutes of direct pressure
• Sudden, severe pain anywhere in the body
• Poisoning (also call poison control at 800.222.1222 to begin home treatment)
• A serious animal bite (broken skin)
• Severe burns, including chemical and electrical, especially on the face
• A severe or worsening reaction to an insect bite or sting
• Reaction to a medication, especially if breathing is difficult
• A major injury, such as a head trauma or a severe sports injury
• Unexplained drowsiness or disorientation
• Coughing up or vomiting blood
• Severe or persistent vomiting
• Signs of shock, including pale, clammy skin, weak and rapid pulse
• Suicidal or homicidal feelings
